A Permanent Legacy in the Making
Washington Gladden Social Justice Park is one step closer to welcoming a new permanent public artwork—a visual centerpiece for the park’s mission and mural wall.
The Park and First Congregational Church issued a national call for artists whose work reflects justice, equity, and collective action. From 48 submissions, eight semifinalists were selected, and on August 25, the Art Selection Panel narrowed the list to three finalists.
Those artists, coming from Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas, visited on October 6 for a tour of the park and a public engagement session exploring art, civic life, and social justice in Columbus.
The dialogue with local organizations, students, and residents will inform their final site-specific proposals.
The commissioned work will replace the current mural panels and may include new design elements—potentially even a water feature—building on the park’s role as an urban oasis. As the project moves forward, park volunteers will lead a capital campaign to raise funds for the art installation and help bring this new vision to life.
